Koryaksky Autonomous Region

Here is the true north. "Glory to you tundra! I am away from the bustle of cities and roar of transportation, from, the exhaust of cars... There is no life better than that in the tundra. Love of the tundra is like the love of a mother. It is kind, rich and generous like a wet nurse and like a nanny, it cares, feeds and gives life and warmth".

This is how a brilliant regional Koryak artist and fairy-tale writer Kyrill Kilpalin wrote about the tundra. Exhibitions of his works astounded art critics from large capitals of the world. Tourists can become acquainted with his works in Petropavlovsk, in the Kamchatka region's Museum of Local Lore. And when they discover his art, they possibly will discover in themselves an unusual feeling known as the 'Call of theNorth.'

Romance and the exotics of the true north will open to a tourist when he travels to the Koryak Autonomous Region.
The region was created on December 10, 1930. On the territory of 305.5 thousand sq. km four of the most northern regions of Kamchatka are located: Tigilsky, Karaginsky, Penzinsky and Olyutorsky.

Koryaks, Chukchi, Itelmens, Evens, Russians, and Ukrainians live here. Despite the permafrost and severe subarctic climate (in winter the temperature goes down to -40 to -50 C), the richness of this region is unique. Numerous rivers are full of valuable types of fish; in the coastal waters there is commercial crabbing. Many natural resources are hidden underground. On the tundra herders guide thousands of caribou herds. All of Kamchatka is rich in valuable fur animals but especially the Koryak region: sable and fox, ermine and blue fox, polar wolf and of course the famous Kamchatka bear. Travelers will be amazed by the whimsical fjords, noisy bird rookeries, red sunsets, and mineral hot springs which warm both people and the land around them. Those who have the eccentric idea to come here in winter will see the northern lights and fine patterns of national clothing and can ride on caribou and dogsleds. Northern romance will always at-tract courageous and strong people.

The administrative center of the region is the settlement Palana. It is comfortable, clean and compact. Tourists will find a hotel, a restaurant, a cafe, and a good music hall here. Writers, artists, and musicians of Palana over many years did a great and often selfless work to preserve and restore the culture of small nationalities of the north. Those who want to travel in the Koryakiya often have to forget the comfort that they were used to but there are exotic discoveries for all tastes. Thee are interesting routes in Koryakiya for lovers of hiking. The most popular is the tour of the northern part of the Seredinny Ridge.
